In Term 4, all of Richmond Primary School will be exploring the concept of diversity. The Preps will do this in the unit of study we have titled 'Commotion in the Ocean' (after a book that is a favourite with the children). Being 'Starfish', 'Seahorses' and 'Angelfish' ourselves and as there are so many wonderful things in the ocean for us to find out about and enjoy, we thought this would be a fun topic to study.
As an introduction to the topic, in Term 3 all the Preps watched a video about the beach and the sea. They then had the chance to tell us what questions they would like to find out about. These questions helped us to plan some of the activities that we will be doing in Term 4. Some of the in- and excursions planned as part of this unit of study are a drama workshop Under the Sea, a visit to the Melbourne Aquarium to find out more about classifying creatures that live in water - Fins or Feathers - and we also hope to visit a beach and a fish sculpture made from those little soy sauce fish (keep sending them in for our collection to be passed on to the artist).
Another way we will be using the children's questions is to create a 'Wonder Wall'. All the questions are posted on the Wonder Wall, with space to display responses around them. Each week each children will choose a question as theirs for discussion and finding out about at home. This is not a writing activity. It is a research task which may simply involve finding out information from family members. Space to record the response to the question, which could simply be a picture, is limited to half an A4 size piece of paper. Each day five children will be rostered to share their findings with the other children in their group, using the piece of paper they have brought from home as a prompt. The Wonder Wall can be added to as questions arise throughout the term. We hope families enjoy discussing the questions their children choose and thinking about the answers with the children.
